Our Concert at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, March 24, 2024... The day of the perfect concert and the favorite of our choral group in our tour in Spain by unanimous decision. I wanted to start the post with this video because that piece is titled “In Paradisum”, and although it speaks of eternal rest, the chords really make us feel in paradise, and the acoustics of this imposing cathedral and its kind and polite audience made that date the pinnacle of happiness, and is that there are few times where everything, everything, EVERYTHING is perfect, and here it happened.

Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, 24 de Marzo de 2024... El día del concierto perfecto y el favorito de nuestra agrupación coral en nuestra gira en España por decisión unánime. Quise comenzar el post con este video porque esa obra se titula "In Paradisum", y aunque habla del descanso eterno, realmente los acordes nos hacen sentir en el paraíso, y la acústica de esta imponente catedral y su amable educado público hizo de esa fecha la cúspide de la felicidad, y es que son contadas las veces donde todo, todo, TODO es perfecto, y aquí ocurrió.

Every March 24 we have a fixed commitment, and that is that we commemorate and sing a mass for Maestro José Antonio Abreu, founder of our musical institution. Here in Caracas there is a fixed cathedral where we meet annually, but in 2024 it was very special, because we were in Europe and it was Palm Sunday. The whole repertoire was sacred, purely from biblical passages or referring to God, passing through the Renaissance and Baroque and ending with contemporary music and even Venezuelan composers like Cesar Alejandro Carrillo. At least I felt the whole concert as a long prayer, full of much gratitude and petitions. I think it was in this city that I forgot for the first time in a year that I was in mourning.

Todos los 24 de Marzo tenemos un compromiso fijo, y es que conmemoramos y cantamos una misa para el Maestro José Antonio Abreu, fundador de nuestra institución musical. Aquí en Caracas hay una catedral fija donde nos reunimos anualmente, pero en 2024 fue muy especial, porque estábamos en Europa y era Domingo de Ramos. Todo el repertorio fue sacro, netamente de pasajes bíblicos o referente a Dios, pasando por el renacimiento y el barroco y terminando con música contemporánea e incluso compositores venezolanos como Cesar Alejandro Carrillo. Al menos yo sentí todo el concierto como una larga oración, llena de mucho agradecimiento y peticiones. Creo que fue en esta ciudad donde olvidé por primera vez en un año que estaba de luto.

In fact miracles happened that day, and that is that all 91 singers of the choir entered on the stairs in front of the altar. We were very, very close together, but as you can see in the video, almost all the women had their necks wrapped around their necks, and it was very cold that night, so the best thing that could have happened was to sing so close together, that gave warmth and kept the pitch perfect. I remember that my wife and her friends had a lot of clothes under their dresses 😅 I bought some warmers, but in the end I didn't use them, our tailcoat is so complicated and has so many clothes that we automatically got warm.

De hecho ocurrieron milagros ese día, y es que los 91 cantantes de la coral entramos en las escaleras frente al altar. Estábamos muy, muy juntos, pero como pueden apreciar en el video, casi todas las mujeres tienen el cuello abrigado, y es que esa noche hacía mucho frío, así que lo mejor que pudo ocurrir fue cantar tan juntos, eso daba calorcito y mantenía la afinación perfecta. Recuerdo que mi esposa y sus amigas tenían mucha ropa debajo de sus vestidos 😅 yo compré algunos calentadores, pero finalmente no los usé, nuestro frac es tan complicado y tiene tantas prendas que automáticamente entramos en calor.

We sang for more than an hour, and neither the public nor we got tired, in fact we wanted more. All the aisles of the cathedral were filled, and many people appreciated the concert standing and others on the sides, where they could not even see us; they only went to listen to quality music and offer it to God. I am still writing these words and it seems that everything was a dream, and believe me, it was perfect. The place, the audience, the costumes, the city, our voices, the repertoire and especially the energy. I am proud of everything we do together, but this day still resonates in my mind and soul.

Cantamos por más de una hora, y ni el público ni nosotros nos cansábamos, de hecho queríamos más. Todos los pasillos de la catedral se llenaron, y mucha gente apreció el concierto de pie y otros en los laterales, donde ni siquiera podían vernos; ellos solo iban para escuchar música de calidad y ofrecerla a Dios. Aún escribo estas palabras y pareciera que todo fue un sueño, y es que créanme, fue perfecto. El lugar, el público, el vestuario, la ciudad, nuestras voces, el repertorio y especialmente la energía. Me enorgullece todo lo que hacemos juntos, pero este día aún resuena en mi mente y en mi alma.

What I felt in this Spanish city is indescribable. I feel that it can be an ideal place to live, and my memories go beyond this concert and the cathedral. The city was very special, and we were only there for one day. We woke up in Granada, took a plane almost at noon and once in Santiago de Compostela there was only time to leave things at the hotel and go out to have lunch and get to know a little before the concert. That night we slept very late and found a place where they sold Venezuelan food. We all went there, it had only been a week, but we already missed our arepas and our empanadas. It was dawn and there was no time for walks, the next bus to the city of Oviedo left at eight in the morning... Definitely, having known and sung in this place I remember it as the most beautiful dream 🙏

Lo que sentí en esta ciudad española es indescriptible. Siento que puede ser un lugar ideal para vivir, y es que mis recuerdos van más allá de este concierto y la catedral. La ciudad era muy especial, y solo estuvimos ahí un día. Amanecimos en Granada, tomamos un avión casi a medio día y una vez en Santiago de Compostela solo hubo tiempo para dejar las cosas en el hotel y salir a almorzar y conocer un poco antes del concierto. Esa noche nos dormimos muy tarde y encontramos un lugar donde vendían comida venezolana. Todos fuimos ahí, solo había pasado una semana, pero ya extrañábamos nuestras arepas y nuestras empanadas. Amaneció y no hubo tiempo de paseos, el siguiente bus hacia la ciudad de Oviedo salía a las ocho de la mañana... Definitivamente, haber conocido y haber cantado en este lugar lo recuerdo como el más hermoso de los sueños 🙏
